Major Difference Between Glossy and Lustre: Glossy and Luster are both surfaces of photographic inkjet paper. Glossy photos are always shiny and smooth while matte photos are textured and dull while lustre paper has deeper colour saturation and higher contrast than matte and is materially ‘thicker,’ or heavier, than consumer paper. In this article, we will show you the major difference between glossy and lustre paper.

Glossy and Lustre

When you have pictures printed, people choose glossy and lustre paper. They might be a bit confused with which one to choose. So it is better to look at the major difference between glossy and lustre.

Glossy is very smooth like glass. It is also frail but has the highest saturation. Glossy paper is with the finest details. However, the colours also look more important with glossy paper. But, glossy paper has a drawback that it gets dirty easily. So if you touch the glossy paper with your dirty fingers, the smear will be shown clearly

Lustre paper is a paper with a texture that has small bubbles. When compared to its equivalent paper, lustre paper does not get dirty that easily. Hence, photographers prefer this type of paper to glossy paper as they do not become dirty with dirty fingers.

The colours are not that importantly exposed when printed on lustre paper. Compared to lustre paper, glossy paper has a highly speculative surface. Glossy paper has a gloss surface, while lustre paper has less gloss. The details are always sharper in glossy paper when compared to the details in a lustre paper.

Glossy paper has a smooth texture while lustre paper is slightly textured. In paper finishes, they also have differences. Glossy paper gives a shiny paper finish while lustre paper gives a soft, sheen finish. When comparing quality, glossy paper gives a better quality than the lustre paper.

However, the prints on lustre print are great if the picture has to be framed and put behind glass. The prints on glossy paper are always framed without having glass as the glare of the print would conflict with the glare of the glass. So, if you want a colourful photo with more vibrancy, glossy paper is the best.

A glossy finish is just like it sounds. The paper is always shiny and will show a lot of light. The colors will also be very saturated and glossy prints are the kinds of prints that you’ll usually find in family albums.

Major Difference Between Glossy and Lustre Paper

1. Glossy paper is very smooth like glass. Glossy paper is also frail but has the highest saturation. The smooth finish makes it very easy to scan glossy finished photos in a computer, but it is a huge difficulty to try to scan it with your phone camera as it will show a lot of light, almost like glass.

2. Lustre paper is a paper that has a texture with small bubbles.

3. Glossy paper has a disadvantage that it gets dirty easily. If you touch the glossy paper with a dirty finger, the smear will be shown clearly.

4. Lustre paper does not get dirty easily.

5. When compared to lustre paper, glossy paper has a high speculative surface.

6. The details are always sharper in glossy paper when compared to the details in lustre paper.

7. Colors also look more important with glossy paper while the colors are not that importantly exposed when printed on lustre paper.

8. The texture you should expect to see from lustre photo paper is very fine particles, as if you were running your fingers through very small pebbles lumped closely together.
