The University of Oxford in the UK summonses applications for the prestigious Clarendon Scholarships for graduate study in the 2021 session. All applicants for graduate study at the University are eligible. Clarendon scholars come from all continents on the globe: from the USA to Australia, Venezuela to Vietnam and from Norway to Nigeria. Around 130 scholarships are granted each year.

The Clarendon Scholarships at University of Oxford are awarded to academically excellent students with the best proven and future potential. The awards are funded by Oxford University Press and are only accessible at the University of Oxford. The scholarships are for graduate degrees and open to full-time and part-time students. Judgments on awards are centered mainly on academic merit.

  • The funding for living costs for scholars on a full-time course is usually adequate to cover the living costs of a single student residing in Oxford.
  • Students on a part-time course get a pro-rata amount of the full-time funding for living costs. Part-time Master’s scholars are given 1/3 of the full-time grant each year for two years. Part-time DPhil scholars are given 1/6 of the full-time grant each year for six years.

  • Under the new Combined Award Policy for Clarendon Scholarship receivers that came into order from the 2011-12 academic year Clarendon scholars may be in receipt of a finance package covering tuition fees, college fees and living costs from several sources, and the worth of the funding package from these sources may equal up to the total of a standard Clarendon Scholarship with an extra £2,500 p/a for living costs.
  • Clarendon students may have small external awards that cover non-fee expenses (e.g. to support seminar attendance, fieldwork expenses and travel) up to the equivalent GBP value of £2,500 p/a without any adjustment to your Clarendon funding package.
  • The Scholarships are given for the full period that you are responsible to pay tuition fees to the University, which is usually the same as the length of your course
  • Scholarships are conditioned to an yearly renewal process based on satisfactory academic growth.
  • Every degree-bearing course at graduate level are qualified.
  • This encompasses all full-time and part-time Master’s courses (MSt, MSc, BCL/MJur, MBA, MFE, MPhil, BPhil, MSc by Research, MTh) and all DPhil (same as PhD) programs.
  • Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma courses are not qualified for this scholarship.
  • All graduate applicants from any country are eligible for this prestigious scholarship which has, up until recently, only been open to international students. There is no partiality for any course of study.
  • Candidates applying to start a fresh graduate course at Oxford are qualified. This includes students who are presently studying for a Master’s degree at Oxford but who will be re-applying for a DPhil (you would be qualified for financial grants for the DPhil)
  • Applicants who already have a place but who deferred entry from a prior year are not qualified to apply (as you can apply for Clarendon in the year that you applied for your place and then, if you are successful, you can apply to defer your funding if you need to defer your place).
  • Scholars who will continue to study for the same degree at Oxford in the following year are not qualified for this scholarship.

Selection Criteria for Clarendon Scholarships at University of Oxford

Clarendon Scholarships at University of Oxford Selection criteria vary slightly depending on the subject area and whether applicants apply for a taught or research degree, but include:

  • An excellent academic record is essential: A first-class honors degree or its equivalent (a GPA score of at least 3.7 if the mark is out of 4) or an outstanding academic record at Master’s level is necessary. Other pointers of high academic accomplishment may comprise of individual marks on student transcripts; indication of former university prizes or awards; information on your overall position within your cohort; and publications (if applicable).
  • Aptitude for the anticipated course of study: This may be evaluated by reviewing academic references, the research proposal, demonstrated evidence of aptitude for research, and the likelihood the scholar will contribute significantly to their field of study.
  • Student motivation: This is evaluated via evidence of the applicant’s commitment to their proposed course, evaluated by the personal statement and referees’ reports.
