The Resident Fellowship is the core offering for scholars and artists of all disciplines to develop projects that expand the way we think about the history, practice, and performance of dance. Past fellows have emanated from wide-ranging fields such as history, design, philosophy, visual arts, and more. Fellows are not mandated to be professionals in ballet or dance, but must have an desire to engaging with the art.

Physically, ballet is a process of training based on a linear and geometrically proportioned organization of the human body. Ballet is intelligently expansive; it has deep networks to philosophy and mathematics, to manners and religion, to painting and fashion, and to the practices of war and the ambitions of sport. At its beginnings, ballet was a western art form with backgrounds in the Renaissance. All through its history, it expressed a vision of society and civic culture, which was at first courtly and aristocratic and in the 20th century became public and democratic. In the present day, ballet is practiced world-wide and has incorporated and impacted a wide range of dance traditions and styles.
